The SUV That Thinks It’s a GT, 2019 Bentayga Speed W12

3 min read

When Bentley announced they were building an SUV, purists wept into their brandy snifters. When they revealed the Bentayga Speed would pack 626 horsepower from a twin-turbocharged W12 engine, those same purists quietly began checking their bank balances. This is what happens when a company with a century of grand touring expertise decides to build the world’s most luxurious rocket ship on stilts.

The Fastest SUV Money Could Buy

In 2019, the Bentayga Speed held the crown as the world’s fastest production SUV, capable of 190 mph with the dignity of a Crewe-built drawing room. The 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 delivers its 626 horsepower with the sort of effortless surge that makes traffic lights feel like gentle suggestions rather than legal requirements.

The engine note is distinctly Bentley: a cultured rumble at idle that builds to a purposeful roar under full acceleration, yet never crude or shouty. This is a powertrain designed for the Autobahn, not the drag strip, though it will dispatch the 0-60 mph sprint in just 3.8 seconds with surprising violence for something weighing over 5,300 pounds.

Craftsmanship Meets Carbon Fiber

Step inside, and you’re reminded why Bentley commands such premium pricing. Every surface is either hand-stitched leather, polished wood veneer, or knurled metal. The Speed variant adds carbon fiber trim and Alcantara inserts, creating a cockpit that feels both sporting and sumptuous. The diamond-quilted seats offer support that would shame many sports cars while coddling occupants in buttery leather.

The rear compartment maintains Bentley’s reputation for passenger luxury, with individual climate zones, entertainment screens, and seating that rivals first-class airline accommodations. This is a vehicle designed for those who refuse to compromise between performance and pampering.

Handling Physics Like a Gentleman

Physics suggests that a 5,300-pound SUV should handle like a luxury yacht in a hurricane. The Bentayga Speed politely disagrees. Bentley’s engineers have performed remarkable feats with air suspension, active anti-roll bars, and torque vectoring to create something that defies its own dimensions.

In Sport mode, the Bentayga hunkers down and transforms into something approaching nimble. The steering gains weight and precision, the suspension firms up without becoming punishing, and the eight-speed automatic holds gears with newfound aggression. It’s not going to embarrass a proper sports car on a winding road, but it will surprise you with its composure and capability.

The Grand Touring Philosophy

Where the Bentayga Speed truly excels is in its intended role: grand touring. Point it toward a distant horizon, select the comfort driving mode, and settle in for one of the automotive world’s finest long-distance experiences. The cabin remains whisper-quiet at triple-digit speeds, the seats continue to coddle after hours behind the wheel, and the W12’s torque reserve makes highway passing as effortless as breathing.

This is a vehicle for crossing continents in style, for arriving refreshed at destinations that would leave occupants of lesser vehicles fatigued and frazzled. The all-wheel-drive system ensures capability in challenging weather, while the air suspension can lift the body for moderate off-road adventures, though few owners will venture far from tarmac.

The 2019 Bentayga Speed W12 represents luxury automotive excess at its most compelling, combining genuine supercar performance with the practical elegance only Crewe can deliver. It’s expensive, thirsty, and utterly magnificent in ways that defy rational explanation but make perfect emotional sense. For those who demand the ultimate in high-speed luxury travel, nothing else quite compares.

  1. ngl the w12 is impressive but honestly a good 2.0t with 25-30psi of boost would give you similar real world performance for like a tenth of the price, thats just efficiency lol. bentley knows their market tho so respect to em for the engineering, even if youre paying for the name and leather at that point tbh.

  2. lol yeah but heres the thing – a boosted 2.0t and a w12 are doing completely different jobs under the hood, and honestly ive seen more w12 owners actually maintain their rides than the boost junkies. that said you’re right that theyre not building these for efficiency lol, theyre building them cuz some people can afford to. what id love to see is bentley put even half that r&d into making their service more accessable so regular shops can wrench on them, not just dealerships – thatd be real progress imho

  3. honestly ngl the w12 is such a wild engine choice for an suv but thats exactly why i love it, like theres something about taking a motor that was never designed for that application and just… making it work that gets me everytime. id love to see what happens when someone inevitably swaps one of those into something completley crazy, imagine a w12 in like an old jeep or something lol your gonna need some serious fabrication skills but hey if it fits you make it fit
