The Electric Adventure Machine, 2020 Rivian R1S

3 min read

When Rivian unveiled the R1S, it didn’t just introduce another electric SUV to the market. It created an entirely new category: the electric adventure vehicle. This seven-seat SUV promised to take families into the wilderness with the silence of electric power and the capability to conquer terrain that would challenge traditional off-road vehicles.

Revolutionary Electric Off-Road Performance

The R1S is powered by four individual electric motors, one at each wheel, producing a combined 835 horsepower and 908 lb-ft of torque. This quad-motor setup enables precise torque vectoring that makes the R1S incredibly capable both on and off-road. Unlike traditional SUVs that rely on mechanical differentials and transfer cases, the R1S can instantly adjust power to each wheel with computer precision.

The performance figures are staggering. Despite weighing over 7,000 pounds and seating seven, the R1S can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 3.0 seconds. The instant torque delivery from the electric motors provides effortless acceleration that feels almost surreal in such a large vehicle.

Adventure-Ready Design and Features

Rivian designed the R1S with adventure in mind. The vehicle features an adjustable air suspension that can raise the SUV to provide 14.9 inches of ground clearance, while also lowering it for easier entry and improved aerodynamics at highway speeds. The approach angle of 34 degrees and departure angle of 30 degrees rival dedicated off-road vehicles.

The R1S includes innovative storage solutions that set it apart from other SUVs. The “frunk” (front trunk) provides 11.1 cubic feet of storage space, while the “gear tunnel” runs through the vehicle between the first and second rows, offering additional storage for camping gear, tools, or sports equipment. The rear also features a powered tonneau cover and tailgate.

Interior and Technology

The cabin combines premium materials with rugged functionality. The dashboard features a large 15.6-inch touchscreen that controls most vehicle functions, while a smaller 12.3-inch screen serves as the instrument cluster. The interior is finished in sustainable materials, including wood trim sourced from responsibly managed forests.

The second-row seats can be configured as either a three-seat bench or two captain’s chairs, while the third row provides adequate space for adults on shorter trips. All three rows offer excellent visibility through the large windows and panoramic roof.

Range and Charging Capabilities

With the large battery pack, the R1S offers an EPA-estimated range of 316 miles, which is impressive for such a large and powerful vehicle. The SUV supports DC fast charging at rates up to 210 kW, allowing for 140 miles of range to be added in just 20 minutes under ideal conditions.

Rivian has also invested heavily in charging infrastructure, planning to install over 3,500 DC fast chargers at more than 600 sites by the end of 2023. These “Rivian Adventure Network” chargers are strategically located near outdoor recreation areas, making them ideal for the R1S’s target audience.

  1. Great question about the thermal management, Wendy and Paul! I’m honestly more curious about the R1S’s crash safety ratings though, since it’s marketed as a family vehicle. The 2020 model got solid NHTSA scores overall, but I’d love to see how that massive battery pack affects the structural rigidity in side-impact scenarios compared to traditional SUVs. Anyone know if Rivian’s published detailed crash test data for the battery case itself?

  2. I’ve got to say, the instant torque delivery on these electric rigs is genuinely impressive for off-road work, nothing like the lag you deal with on traditional combustion engines. That said, I’m with Wendy on the thermal management concern – I’ve pushed my 911 Turbo S and 992 Carrera 4S hard on track days where sustained performance is everything, and managing heat under constant load is no joke. Would be really curious to hear from someone who’s taken an R1S on serious backcountry expeditions about how the battery temps hold up over 8-10 hours of actual trail work.

  3. ngl the electric drivetrain is sick for torque delivery but im curious how theyre handling battery thermal management on legit trails – like when youre pushing it hard in rough terrain for hours. in my shop we see alot of hype around EVs but the real world durability stuff is what matters to me, especially if women are gonna be working on these things and need to actually understand whats going on under the hood ya know?
