The Last of the Real Off-Road Warriors, 2015 Mitsubishi Pajero Montero Limited

3 min read

While the automotive world obsessed over sleek crossovers and urban-friendly SUVs, Mitsubishi quietly perfected something increasingly rare: a proper off-road machine. The 2015 Pajero Montero Limited represents the culmination of decades of desert racing expertise, wrapped in a package that could conquer the Sahara on Sunday and handle school pickup duty on Monday.

Desert Racing DNA

The Pajero’s credentials aren’t built on marketing hype but on genuine competition success. This is the SUV that dominated the grueling Paris-Dakar Rally, claiming victory twelve times between 1985 and 2007. That racing pedigree translates directly to the production model, with sophisticated four-wheel-drive systems and suspension tuning that prioritizes capability over comfort.

Under the hood, the 3.2-liter direct-injection diesel engine produces 200 horsepower and 324 lb-ft of torque, numbers that might seem modest until you experience how effectively this powertrain delivers its strength. The engine’s broad torque curve provides the kind of low-end grunt essential for serious off-road work, while returning respectable fuel economy for such a capable machine.

Super Select 4WD Mastery

The Pajero’s party trick is its Super Select 4WD II system, a sophisticated setup that offers four distinct driving modes. Unlike simple part-time systems, Super Select allows full-time four-wheel drive on any surface, automatically distributing power where it’s needed most. The center differential can be locked for extreme conditions, while the rear differential lock ensures maximum traction when the terrain gets truly challenging.

What sets this system apart is its intelligence. Electronic sensors constantly monitor wheel slip and adjust power distribution in real-time, while the multi-mode suspension adapts to changing conditions. It’s technology that works seamlessly in the background, allowing drivers to focus on navigation rather than mechanical complexity.

Built for the Long Haul

The Pajero’s construction reflects its serious intent. The body-on-frame architecture provides the structural integrity necessary for heavy-duty use, while the independent front suspension and multi-link rear setup deliver surprisingly refined on-road behavior. Approach and departure angles are generous, ground clearance is substantial, and the skid plates are more than decorative touches.

Inside, the Limited trim offers genuine luxury without the pretense. Leather appointments, climate control, and a premium audio system create a comfortable environment for long-distance travel. The seats are supportive during extended driving sessions, while storage solutions throughout the cabin show thoughtful attention to practical needs.

The Road Less Traveled

On pavement, the Pajero feels substantial but never cumbersome. The steering is direct and well-weighted, while the suspension strikes an admirable balance between off-road capability and on-road composure. Highway cruising is relaxed and quiet, with the diesel engine pulling strongly at legal speeds.

Where the Pajero truly excels is in challenging terrain. Rock crawling reveals the system’s sophistication as power flows seamlessly between wheels, maintaining momentum even when traction disappears. The low-range gearing provides precise control in technical sections, while the electronic aids prevent drama before it begins.

  1. man i got mad respect for these things, theyre basically indestructible if you know what your doing under the hood. way better than these new suv’s that need a dealer trip every time the check engine light blinks. id love to get my hands on one of these for a weekend project – bet the frame and suspension are way more fixable than todays computer-laden garbage. real solid design from an era when they actually let you wrench on yr own ride, ngl

  2. tbh tom youre spot on – the pajeros got worked harder by there owners since they actually go places, whereas 4runners sit in suburban driveways lookin tough. ive had a 2015 in long-term and the thing just refuses to quit even when you treat it like a pack mule, but yeah finding one thats been babied is nearly imposible compared to the toyota tax.

  3. wait so ive been looking at these 2015 pajeros for like 3 months now and nobody ever mentions how much harder they are to find with low miles compared to the 4runners from that same year, have you guys noticed that? also curious if the fuel economy difference is really as bad as some forums say or if theres some maintenance tweak that helps, because i cant find a solid real world comparison between this and the 2010-2015 4runner when theyre actually well maintained. anyone actually own both?
