Korea’s Palace on Wheels, 2018 Genesis G90 5.0 Ultimate

4 min read

When Genesis launched as Hyundai’s luxury division, skeptics questioned whether a Korean brand could truly challenge the German triumvirate. The 2018 G90 5.0 Ultimate answers that question with authority, delivering a level of refinement and presence that would make Stuttgart nervous.

This isn’t just badge engineering or aspirational marketing. The G90 represents a genuine attempt to redefine luxury for a new generation, combining old-world craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology and a uniquely Korean approach to hospitality.

First Impressions: Presence Without Pretense

The G90’s design language speaks in whispers rather than shouts. While German competitors increasingly adopt aggressive styling, Genesis chose restraint and elegance. The signature crest grille commands attention without appearing confrontational, while the flowing roofline and chrome accents suggest movement even at rest.

At 204 inches long, the G90 makes no apologies for its size. This is a car designed for those who’ve earned the right to arrive in style, whether pulling up to a corporate boardroom or a country club valet stand.

The 5.0-Liter Heart

Under the sculpted hood lies Genesis’s crown jewel: a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 producing 420 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. In an era of downsized, turbocharged engines, this powerplant feels refreshingly honest. The V8 delivers power with a linear, predictable character that turbocharged competitors can’t match.

Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive, the G90 accelerates with surprising urgency for a 4,600-pound sedan. The 0-60 mph sprint takes just 5.0 seconds, but more importantly, the engine provides effortless highway passing power and refined operation at all speeds.

Interior Excellence: Korean Hospitality Meets German Engineering

Step inside the G90 Ultimate, and you’re greeted by what Genesis calls “Athletic Elegance.” The cabin combines premium materials with thoughtful design touches that prioritize occupant comfort above all else. Nappa leather covers nearly every surface, complemented by genuine wood trim and soft-touch materials throughout.

The front seats offer 22-way power adjustment with heating, cooling, and massage functions. Rear passengers enjoy even more luxury, with reclining seats, individual climate controls, and their own infotainment screens. The attention to detail rivals anything from Bentley or Mercedes-Maybach.

Technology Integration

Genesis equipped the G90 with a comprehensive technology suite that feels intuitive rather than overwhelming. The 12.3-inch infotainment display responds quickly to inputs, while the available head-up display projects essential information clearly onto the windshield.

Safety technology includes Genesis’s full suite of active safety features, positioning the G90 as one of the most technologically advanced sedans available at any price point.

On the Road: Serene Authority

The G90’s driving character prioritizes refinement over sportiness, and that’s exactly as it should be. The suspension, tuned specifically for the North American market, absorbs road imperfections with remarkable composure while maintaining excellent body control.

Steering feel is appropriately weighted for a luxury sedan, providing enough feedback for confidence without transmitting unwanted vibrations. The all-wheel-drive system operates transparently, sending power where needed without drama or intervention.

Most impressive is the G90’s acoustic refinement. Genesis engineers spent considerable effort creating a serene cabin environment, and their work shows. Even at highway speeds, the G90 maintains library-quiet composure.

Value Proposition: Luxury Democratized

Perhaps the G90’s greatest achievement is its pricing strategy. Starting at around $68,000 for the Ultimate trim, the G90 undercuts comparable German rivals by $20,000 or more while matching or exceeding their equipment levels.

Genesis also includes complimentary scheduled maintenance, roadside assistance, and even valet service for maintenance appointments. This level of customer care reflects Korean business culture and sets Genesis apart from established luxury brands.

  1. Wait, you autocrossed a G90? That’s actually awesome because those things look like pure cruisers but you’re right about the weight dist – Genesis really nailed the front/rear balance on that platform. I’m curious what tire compound you were running and if you felt any understeer tendency in the heavy braking zones? The 5.0 V8 has gotta make corner exit interesting with all that power, can’t imagine the grip levels match the horsepower without serious rubber.

  2. ngl that 5.0 v8 is solid but you guys are talking about autocross and im over here wondering what that thing pulls at 70mph on the highway – bet the fuel economy aint great compared to a good diesel but thats luxury for ya lol. genesis really stepped up there game with that platform though, way better than their early stuff, you’re right about the weight dist being decent, my buddy has one and its surprisingly composed for towing a loaded trailer down I95.

  3. Dude that G90 is seriously underrated, I’ve autocrossed against a few in Street class and they’re way more nimble than people expect for that size. The weight distribution on those things is honestly pretty decent if you’re not afraid to push it through a slalom, would love to see what it could do with some good tires and a driver who knows how to use that power delivery. Genesis really nailed the value proposition compared to the German luxury brands.
