While most automakers played it safe with their early electric offerings, Kia took a different approach with the second-generation Soul EV. Rather than creating another anonymous electric appliance, they electrified one of their most characterful designs, proving that zero emissions doesn’t have to mean zero personality.
Design That Dares to Be Different
The 2019 Soul EV maintains the boxy, upright stance that made the original Soul a standout in a sea of jellybean crossovers. The electric version adds subtle but distinctive touches: a closed-off grille with active air flaps, unique LED headlight signatures, and aerodynamic wheels that actually look good. The result is unmistakably a Soul, but with a futuristic twist that announces its electric credentials without shouting about them.
Inside, the Soul EV offers surprising spaciousness thanks to that tall, airy greenhouse. The dashboard layout is refreshingly straightforward, with actual buttons and knobs alongside the touchscreen. The seats are comfortable and supportive, wrapped in eco-friendly materials that don’t feel like a compromise. There’s something genuinely appealing about the Soul’s honest, unpretentious interior approach.
Urban Electric Performance
The Soul EV’s 201-horsepower electric motor delivers exactly the kind of performance that makes electric cars shine in city driving. The instant torque provides snappy acceleration from stoplights, while the regenerative braking system is well-calibrated and intuitive. The steering is light and maneuverable, perfect for urban parking situations where the Soul’s compact dimensions really shine.
On the highway, the Soul EV feels composed and quiet, though it doesn’t pretend to be a long-distance cruiser. The 243-mile EPA range is competitive for its class and era, making it a genuine daily driver for most people’s needs. The onboard charging capabilities, including DC fast charging up to 77 kW, mean quick top-ups during longer trips.
Practical Electric Living
What sets the Soul EV apart from many early electric vehicles is its practicality. The cargo area is genuinely useful, with a flat floor and good shape for everyday items. The rear seats fold flat when needed, and the high seating position provides excellent visibility in traffic. It’s the kind of car that works for real life, not just environmental statements.
The Soul EV also offers multiple driving modes that actually feel different, from eco-focused efficiency to more spirited Normal and Sport settings. The regenerative braking can be adjusted with paddle shifters, allowing drivers to fine-tune the one-pedal driving experience to their preference.
The 2019 Kia Soul EV succeeds where many early electric vehicles stumbled: it’s an electric car that doesn’t sacrifice personality for efficiency. With genuine practicality, distinctive styling, and competitive electric range, it proved that going green doesn’t mean going boring.

nah man ive seen these things around and tbh theyre cute or whatever but gimme that diesel torque any day, you know? cant haul anything with those batteries and the range dies faster than my willingness to deal with gas station coffee lol, but i respect that theyre trying to do something diffrent for city folks i guess.
Log in or register to replylol ngl electric is growing on me but yeah where’s the turbo tho, thats what id really wanna see in one of these. soul ev with a turbo four swap would be spicy but i get your point doug, range anxiety is real and theres something satisfying about that diesel grunt that batters just cant replicate…yet lmao
Log in or register to replyive actually had a soul ev for like 8 months now and the range thing is way overblown tbh – most peoples commutes are nothing, its just psychological. that said yeah the turbo four swap idea is hilarious because honestly the evs instant torque response already feels way more lively than diesel grunt ever did, you’re just used to how diesel feels i guess. diesel torque is more of a marketing feeling at this point lol.
