French Electric Revolution, 2024 Peugeot e-208 GT

3 min read

The French have always done things differently, and Peugeot’s e-208 GT proves that national character survives the transition to electric power. This isn’t just another compliance EV wrapped in boring efficiency clothes. It’s a proper French hot hatch that happens to run on electrons instead of petrol.

With 156 horsepower and that distinctively Gallic sense of style, the e-208 GT represents Peugeot’s vision of electric performance for the masses. But can French flair overcome the practical challenges of affordable EV ownership?

Electric Performance with Personality

Fire up the e-208 GT and the first thing you notice is how it retains the character that made the original 208 GTI such a delight. The electric motor delivers 156 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque instantly, launching this compact hatch to 60 mph in a respectable 8.1 seconds. While that’s not scorching by modern standards, it feels quicker thanks to the immediate torque delivery that defines electric driving.

The chassis setup is unmistakably Peugeot, with that characteristic French blend of comfort and control. The suspension manages to be both compliant over city streets and engaging when you find a twisty back road. The steering, while electrically assisted, retains enough feedback to make spirited driving genuinely enjoyable. This is a proper driver’s car that happens to be electric, not an electric car trying to be sporty.

Range Reality and Charging Capabilities

The 50 kWh battery pack provides an EPA-estimated range of 217 miles, which puts it squarely in the practical daily driver category. In real-world mixed driving, expect closer to 180-200 miles depending on conditions and driving style. The good news is that the e-208 GT supports 100 kW DC fast charging, allowing for 10-80% charging in around 30 minutes under ideal conditions.

For urban dwellers, this range envelope makes perfect sense. The e-208 GT excels as a city car with weekend capability, though longer road trips require some planning. The onboard charging infrastructure in the e-208 is comprehensive, with multiple charging ports and intelligent charging management that can be controlled via smartphone app.

Interior Innovation Meets French Flair

Step inside and you’re greeted by Peugeot’s i-Cockpit design philosophy taken to its logical electric conclusion. The small, flat-bottomed steering wheel sits below a high-mounted digital instrument cluster, creating an almost fighter jet-like driving position. The central touchscreen handles most vehicle functions, though Peugeot has wisely retained some physical controls for climate and audio.

The GT trim adds sport seats with distinctive checkered inserts, aluminum pedals, and ambient lighting that changes based on driving mode. Material quality is impressive for this price point, with soft-touch plastics and genuine attention to design details. The rear seats are adequate for adults on short trips, while cargo space is reasonable at 10.5 cubic feet.

Technology and Connectivity

Peugeot has equipped the e-208 GT with a comprehensive suite of technologies that feel both advanced and intuitive. The 10-inch touchscreen runs Peugeot’s latest infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system is responsive and the interface is logical, avoiding the overcomplicated menus that plague some competitors.

Driver assistance features include adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking. The 3D navigation system includes real-time charging station information and can precondition the battery for optimal charging speeds when approaching a fast charger.

  1. The e-208 GT is legit interesting from an efficiency standpoint – that 50kWh battery paired with the 154hp motor gets you around 0.17 kWh/km in real world testing, which is solid. I’ve been running the numbers on lifecycle emissions and French grid electricity really gives EVs a huge advantage there compared to US coal-heavy regions. Question though: have you tested how the performance feels in actual driving versus the spec sheet numbers? I’m curious if the hot hatch DNA survives the transition or if it feels like they just slapped an engine out.

    • yo grant thats actually a rly good point about the efficiency stuff but tbh im more concerned with whether this thing can actually hang sideways lol, like the weight from that battery pack gotta kill the handling right? i havent driven one yet but id bet the instant torque could make it slide if you’re aggressive enough with the throttle, tho im wondering if the center of gravity is too high for it to feel natural compared to like a tuned 208 gti or whatever. you reckon the french engineers dialed in the weight distibution or nah?

  2. ngl the e-208 gt looks pretty sick but like can u even drift it tho? im genuinely curious if the weight distribution n instant torque would make it fun on track or if its just gonna be boring sedan vibes. maybe thats just me but everything needs to be sideways lol
