The Van That Thinks It’s a Spaceship, 2022 Canoo Lifestyle Delivery Vehicle

3 min read

In a world where every electric vehicle seems to chase the same sleek, wind-cheating aesthetic, Canoo’s Lifestyle Delivery Vehicle stands as a defiant middle finger to conventional automotive design. This isn’t just another electric van, it’s a rolling manifesto that function can be beautiful in its own brutalist way.

The Future Has Angles

Step back and look at the LDV, and you’ll immediately understand why Canoo calls it a “lifestyle” vehicle. The proportions are unlike anything else on the road, riding on what the company calls a skateboard platform that pushes the wheels to the absolute corners. The result is a vehicle that’s almost comically spacious inside relative to its footprint, like someone took a conventional van and stretched it in all the right directions.

The exterior design is polarizing in the best possible way. Where other commercial vehicles try to blend in or ape the styling cues of passenger cars, the LDV embraces its purpose with geometric honesty. The flat glass, sharp creases, and minimal overhangs create something that looks more like a piece of industrial architecture than a vehicle. It’s brutalist automotive design, and it works.

Skateboard Philosophy

Canoo’s skateboard platform isn’t just marketing speak, it’s a fundamental reimagining of how vehicles are built. By mounting the batteries flat in the floor and pushing the electric motors to the wheels, the company has created a completely flat load floor that runs from the very front of the vehicle to the very back. No intrusive wheel wells, no transmission tunnel, no compromises.

The driving position is revelatory. Sit behind the wheel and you’re essentially perched above the front axle, with an unobstructed view of the road ahead and to the sides. Visibility is phenomenal, partly due to the upright seating position and partly due to the vast expanses of glass. For a commercial vehicle, this translates to safer maneuvering in tight spaces and better awareness of pedestrians and cyclists.

Electric Efficiency

The LDV’s electric powertrain is sized appropriately for its intended use. The 200 horsepower might not sound like much, but it’s perfectly adequate for urban delivery duties. The torque delivery is immediate and smooth, making the van surprisingly pleasant to drive in stop-and-go traffic. The regenerative braking is well-calibrated, providing meaningful range extension without the one-pedal driving feeling being too aggressive.

Range is estimated at around 230 miles, which should cover most commercial routes with room to spare. The charging capability maxes out at around 75 kW, which isn’t class-leading but is perfectly adequate for overnight charging between shifts. The real efficiency comes from the vehicle’s purpose-built design rather than raw battery size.

The Commercial Reality

Where the LDV truly shines is in its intended commercial environment. The cargo area is genuinely cavernous, with enough space for multiple Euro pallets and a load floor that sits at the perfect height for loading docks. The wide-opening rear doors and optional side access make loading and unloading genuinely efficient.

The build quality feels appropriate for commercial use, with hard-wearing materials throughout and controls that prioritize functionality over luxury. This isn’t a van trying to be a luxury SUV, it’s a tool designed to do a specific job very well.

The Canoo LDV represents everything right about the electric vehicle revolution: purpose-built design, honest engineering, and a complete rejection of the status quo. This is what happens when form truly follows function, and the result is more compelling than any attempt at conventional beauty could ever be.

  1. The range question is so practical, Denise – I love it. Canoo specs’d these around 150-200 miles depending on payload and driving conditions, which honestly works great for last-mile delivery routes but gets trickier for longer hauls. What’s cool from an emissions standpoint is that even with a modest range, these electric vans eliminate tailpipe emissions entirely, so they’d sail through any state’s smog test with flying colors, unlike their diesel counterparts. The real challenge isn’t the vehicle itself but building out charging infrastructure fast enough to make fleet adoption realistic.

  2. ngl this thing looks like it belongs in a scifi movie more than on the road lol, but i gotta ask – whats the actual range on these? ive seen alot of hype around electric vans but most of em seem like glorified golf carts compared to a good old diesel work truck. probly never gonna replace my dodge for hauling but curious if theres any real performance specs out there.

  3. I have to admit, when I first saw the renders I was skeptical, but the skateboard platform is genuinely clever from an engineering perspective. That said, 150-200 miles feels limiting compared to what we’re seeing in luxury EV sedans these days, though I suppose the delivery use case is totally different from what I’m typically interested in. Still curious whether they’re focusing on the commercial market or if there’s any play toward premium consumer versions down the line?
