The Cat Goes Electric, 2019 Jaguar I-PACE EV400

3 min read

When Jaguar announced its first all-electric vehicle, the automotive world held its breath. Could the British marque, steeped in decades of combustion engine heritage, successfully transition to the electric age while maintaining its distinctive character? The 2019 I-PACE EV400 provided a resounding answer, delivering a compelling blend of traditional Jaguar luxury and forward-thinking electric performance.

Electric Revolution Meets British Heritage

The I-PACE represents more than just Jaguar’s entry into the electric vehicle market; it’s a statement of intent. Launched as a direct competitor to Tesla’s Model X, the I-PACE carved out its own niche by prioritizing driving dynamics and interior luxury over maximum range or acceleration bragging rights. From the moment you approach the vehicle, its cab-forward proportions and sleek silhouette announce that this is something entirely new from Coventry.

The exterior design successfully translates Jaguar’s design language into the electric era. The signature grille, now purely decorative but aesthetically necessary, maintains brand continuity while the flowing roofline and dramatic haunches give the I-PACE a coupe-like appearance despite its SUV proportions. Every surface appears sculpted by the wind, with aerodynamic efficiency clearly prioritizing form following function.

Interior Excellence and Technology Integration

Step inside, and you’re greeted by an interior that feels unmistakably Jaguar. The cabin showcases a beautiful blend of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology. Premium leather surfaces, real wood trim, and metal accents create an ambiance that rivals any luxury vehicle, electric or otherwise. The panoramic glass roof floods the interior with natural light, enhancing the sense of space and openness.

The dual-screen infotainment system, while occasionally laggy in early production models, provides comprehensive control over vehicle functions and charging parameters. Physical controls remain for climate functions, a thoughtful touch that many competitors have abandoned in favor of complete screen integration. Rear passengers benefit from generous headroom and legroom, making the I-PACE genuinely practical for families.

Electric Performance with Jaguar DNA

The EV400 powertrain delivers its 394 horsepower and 512 lb-ft of torque with the instant response that defines electric performance. Zero to 60 mph arrives in just 4.5 seconds, accompanied by the subtle whir of electric motors rather than traditional engine noise. What sets the I-PACE apart from many electric vehicles is its chassis tuning, which prioritizes driving engagement over maximum efficiency.

The adaptive suspension system provides a compelling balance between comfort and control. In normal driving, the I-PACE glides over road imperfections with typical luxury car refinement. Switch to Dynamic mode, and the suspension firms up, steering weight increases, and the throttle response sharpens, transforming the character entirely. The low-mounted battery pack provides a low center of gravity that benefits handling, while the near-perfect weight distribution contributes to neutral, predictable dynamics.

Real-World Range and Charging

The 90kWh battery pack provides an EPA-rated range of 234 miles, which proved realistic in mixed driving conditions. While not class-leading, the range proved adequate for most daily driving scenarios. More importantly, the I-PACE’s 100kW DC fast-charging capability allows for rapid top-ups during longer journeys, though charging speeds can vary significantly depending on battery temperature and state of charge.

The I-PACE proved that traditional luxury automakers could successfully transition to electric power without losing their essential character. While newer EVs may offer longer range or faster charging, few match the I-PACE’s combination of driving dynamics, interior craftsmanship, and distinctive British style. It remains a compelling choice for buyers seeking electric performance wrapped in genuine luxury.

  1. honestly the i-pace looked great at launch events but ive been curious how theyre holding up now, like what are the battery degradation numbers at 100k miles? every ev journo was swooning over it in 2019 but press fleet cars dont tell you anything about how your’e gonna feel about it in year three when the novelty wears off and you’re stuck with a jag infotainment system lol

    • ngl i get what your saying but id rather see the 0-60 and quarter mile times honestly, a jag that can do sub 5 second launches is way more intresting to me than battery degradation lol. tho i get that for actual ownership its probably more important, just saying the i-pace has respectable acceleration numbers so atleast theres that going for it even if the long term reliablility is sketchy.

  2. shane brings up a really good point tbh – jaguars track record on long term reliability isnt exactly stellar and when you’re dropping that much on an ev your’re banking on the battery holding up. id love to see some consumer reports or jd power data on actual owner experiences past 50k miles, not just the manufacturers claims. the i-pace is gorgeous but luxury evs have so much more complex stuff that can go wrong, and resale values on first gen electrics tend to tank hard when people start realizing the real ownership costs.
